The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
I CALL TO witness the sun and his early morning splendour, 1 By the Moon as she follows him; 2 and by the day as it reveals its glory 3 By the night when it envelopeth it, 4 By the heaven and Him Who builded it, 5 And by the earth and Him Who spread it, 6 by the soul and how He formed it, 7 Then He inspired it to understand what is right and wrong for it; 8 He is indeed successful who causeth it to grow, 9 And he fails that corrupts it! 10 The Thamud tribe rejected the truth because of their arrogance, 11 When the basest of them broke forth 12 But the Messenger of Allah said to them: "It is a She-camel of Allah! And (bar her not from) having her drink!" 13 But they gave him the lie, and hamstrung the she-camel. So their Lord destroyed them for their crime and razed their city to the ground. 14 And for Him is no fear of its consequences. 15
