Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha-Mim. 1 CONSIDER this divine writ, clear in itself and clearly showing the truth! 2 We revealed it on a Blessed Night, for We were intent on warning; 3 During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. 4 A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), 5 in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, 6 the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them - if you could but grasp it with inner certainty! 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. 9 Then watch thou for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke (or mist) plainly visible, 10 That will envelop the people. This will be a painful punishment. 11 Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us – we now accept faith.” 12 How can there be an admonition unto them, when surely there came unto them an apostle manifest! 13 Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" 14 Lo! We withdraw the torment a little. Lo! ye return (to disbelief). 15 But on that Day We will assault them most mightily, and then We shall revenge! 16 ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, 17 [Saying], "Render to me the servants of Allah. Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger," 18 And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. 19 and, behold, it is with my Sustainer - and your Sustainer - that I seek refuge against all your endeavours to revile me. 20 And if you do not believe in me, then leave me alone. 21 And he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk. 22 So depart thou with My bondmen by night; verily ye shall be pursued. 23 "And leave the sea as a furrow (divided): for they are a host (destined) to be drowned." 24 How many of gardens and springs do they [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people] left. 25 And the cornlands and the goodly sites 26 and good things in which they took delight. 27 That is what We did; and We made another nation their heirs. 28 Then neither the sky shed tears over them nor the earth. They were granted no respite. 29
