Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the Dawn 1 by the Ten (secret) Nights, 2 by the even and the odd, 3 And by the night when it departeth, 4 Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception? 5 Have you not heard of how your Lord dealt with the tribe of 'Ad, 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 the like of whom has never been reared in all the land? 8 And how did He deal with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the valley? 9 And with Pharaoh, lord of stakes? 10 Who did transgress beyond bounds in the lands (in the disobedience of Allah). 11 and brought about great corruption therein: 12 Therefore your Lord let down upon them a portion of the chastisement. 13 indeed, your Lord is ever watchful. 14 And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me." 15 But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me." 16 Nay, nay! but ye honour not the orphans! 17 And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor. 18 Why do you take away the inheritance of others indiscriminately 19 And you harbour intense love for wealth. 20 Nay! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 and (when you find yourself) in the presence of your Lord and the rows and rows of angels, your greed for riches will certainly be of no avail to you. 22 And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance? 23 He will say: would that I had sent before for this life of mine! 24 On that day the punishment of God and His detention will be unparalleled. 25 Nor shall any bind with His bond. 26 [But unto the righteous God will say,] "O thou human being that hast attained to inner peace! 27 Return unto thy Lord, content in His good pleasure! 28 So enter among My servants, 29 Enter thou My Paradise!' 30
