And verily We sent Moses with Our revelations unto Pharaoh and his chiefs, and he said: I am a messenger of the Lord of the Worlds. 46 Then when he came unto them with Our signs, behold! at them they were laughing. 47 And all the signs We showed them were always greater than the earlier ones; and We seized them with calamities, so that they may return. 48 And they said, "O thou sorcerer! Invoke thy Lord for us according to His covenant with thee; for we shall truly accept guidance." 49 Then when We had removed from them the torment, behold they were breaking their promise. 50 And Pharaoh proclaimed among his people: “My people, do I not have dominion over Egypt, and are these streams not flowing beneath me? Can't you see? 51 I am surely better than this fellow, who is despicable and can hardly make (his meaning) plain! 52 Why were bracelets of gold not bestowed upon him? Why did a retinue of angels not accompany him as attendants?” 53 In this way he fooled his people and they obeyed him: they were a rebellious people. 54 So, when they had angered Us, We took vengeance on them, and We drowned them all together; 55 We made them a precedent, an example for later peoples. 56
