He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ HE FROWNED AND turned away, 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 What could inform thee but that he might grow (in grace) 3 or receive some (Quranic) advice which would benefit him. 4 But the self-sufficient, 5 you eagerly attended to him -- 6 though you are not to be blamed if he would not purify himself -- 7 But as for him who cometh unto thee with earnest purpose 8 And with fear (in his heart), 9 of him you were unmindful. 10 NAY, VERILY, these [messages] are but a reminder: 11 For any one who desires to bear it in mind, 12 in [the light of His] revelations blest with dignity, 13 lofty and pure, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 and angelic scribes. 16 Woe to man! What hath made him reject Allah; 17 Of what thing hath He created him? 18 From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him; 19 Then doth He make His path smooth for him; 20 then He caused him to die and brought him to the grave, 21 Then, when He willed, He brought him out. (As during the night of Holy Prophet’s ascension, when all the Prophets gathered behind him in the Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem. Or when Allah will raise everyone on the Day of Resurrection.) 22 No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him. 23 Let man consider his food: 24 We poured out the rains abundantly, 25 and cleaved the earth, cleaving it asunder; 26 Then We cause therein the grain to grow, 27 And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle), 28 And olive and palm trees 29 thickly planted gardens, 30 fruits, and grass. 31 (To be) a provision and benefit for you and your cattle. 32 So when the deafening Shout arrives, 33 on that Day each person will flee from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father, 35 his wife and his children. 36 for on that day everyone will be completely engrossed in his own concerns. 37 on that Day some faces will be beaming, 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 And some faces will on that Day with dust be covered, 40 with darkness overspread: 41 those -- they are the unbelievers, the libertines. 42
