The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall 1 to those who deny the truth. No power can hinder God 2 From Allah, the Lord of all pinnacles. 3 all the angels and all the inspiration [ever granted to man] ascend unto Him [daily,] in a day the length whereof is [like] fifty thousand years… 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 They surely take it to be far away, 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 Upon the day when heaven shall be as molten copper 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 And no friend inquires after friend 10 though they shall be within sight of each other. The guilty one will gladly ransom himself from the torment of that Day by sacrificing his own children, 11 and his spouse and his brother, 12 the kinsmen who gave him shelter, 13 And all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him. 14 But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell 15 That would skin the scalp. 16 It will claim all such as turn their backs [on what is right,] and turn away [from the truth,] 17 and amass [wealth] and thereupon withhold [it from their fellow-men]. 18 ۞ Surely man is created of a hasty temperament 19 When evil toucheth him, he is bewailing. 20 And refraining, when good reaches him. 21 except those who are steadfast 22 who are steadfast in prayer; 23 And those in whose riches is a known right. 24 for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, 25 those who firmly believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord – 27 the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, 28 who guard their privates 29 except from their wives and slave girls, in which case they are not to be blamed, 30 So those who desire more than this – it is they who are the transgressors. 31 And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive 32 and perform their witnessings, 33 And those who protect their prayers. 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
