The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city, Makkah - 1 And thou art an indweller of this city - 2 And by the giver of birth, and whom he fathered, 3 Verily, We have created man into [a life of] pain, toil and trial. 4 Does he think that none has power over him! 5 And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth: 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Did We not make two eyes for him? 8 One tongue, and two lips, 9 And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways? 10 So he did not quickly enter the steep valley. 11 What could let you know what the height is! 12 It is the setting free of a slave 13 Or, feeding, in a day of privation, 14 of an orphaned relative 15 and downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of) 16 And to be of those who believe, and urge upon one another to persevere, and urge upon each other to be kind. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 But those who disbelieve in Our verses, they are the Companions of the Left, 19 The Fire will be shut over them (i.e. they will be enveloped by the Fire without any opening or window or outlet. 20
