Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 And by ten nights, 2 By the even and odd (contrasted); 3 And by the night when it departeth, 4 Is there not an evidence in this for those who have sense? 5 Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with Ad, 6 The people of many-columned lram. 7 the like of whom has never been reared in all the land? 8 And the tribe of Thamud, who hewed rocks in the valley. 9 And (with) Firon, the lord of hosts, 10 led rebellious lives, 11 And multiplied therein corruption. 12 and therefore thy Sustainer let loose upon them a scourge of suffering: 13 Lo! thy Lord is ever watchful. 14 And as for man, when his Lord tries him, then treats him with honor and makes him lead an easy life, he says: My Lord honors me. 15 But when he tries him and stints for him his provision, then he says, 'My Lord has despised me.' 16 Nay, nay! but ye honour not the orphans! 17 And urge not on the feeding of the poor. 18 And you readily devour the inheritance with greed. 19 And love wealth with all your heart. 20 But no; when the earth is ground to powder, 21 And your Lord comes and (also) the angels in ranks, 22 And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance? 23 He will say: 'Would that I had forwarded (good works) for my life!' 24 For, none can make suffer as He will make suffer [the sinners] on that Day, 25 nor will any bind as He binds. 26 O you tranquil soul, 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased (with him), well-pleasing (Him), 28 Join My worshipers and 29 Enter then My garden." 30
