We created man from sounding clay, from mud moulded into shape; 26 whereas the invisible beings We had created, [long] before that, out of the fire of scorching winds. 27 And [mention, O Muhammad], when your Lord said to the angels, "I will create a human being out of clay from an altered black mud. 28 When it is properly shaped and I have blown My Spirit into it, you should then bow down in prostration". 29 Therefore all the angels, each and every one of them, fell prostrate. 30 But Satan did not; he refused to join those who prostrated themselves. 31 "How is it, O Iblis," said (the Lord), "you did not join those who bowed in homage?" 32 "How could I bow," said he, "before a mortal whom You created from fermented clay dried tingling hard?" 33 (Allah) said: "Then, get out from here, for verily, you are Rajim (an outcast or a cursed one)." [Tafsir At-Tabari] 34 Condemned till the day of Doom!" 35 He said: My Lord! then respite me till the time when they are raised. 36 Allah said: "For sure you are granted respite 37 Till the period of the time made known. 38 Said he, 'My Lord, for Thy perverting me I shall deck all fair to them in the earth, and I shall pervert them, all together, 39 Save such of them as are Thy perfectly devoted slaves. 40 (To which God) said: "This way is right by Me. 41 verily, thou shalt have no power over My creatures - unless it be such as are [already] lost in grievous error and follow thee [of their own will]: 42 And surely Hell is the promised place of them all: 43 Seven gates it has, and unto each gate a set portion of them belongs.' 44
