a good many of olden times, 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 Amidst scorching wind and scalding water. 42 And the shade of black smoke. 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 and persisted in heinous sins. 46 It was they who said, "Shall we be resurrected after we die and have turned into dust and bones? 47 (We) and our fore-fathers of yore?” 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 "And drink Boiling Water on top of it: 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Judgement. 56 WE who have created you, [O men:] why, then, do you not accept the truth? 57 Have ye seen that which ye emit? 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 We have [indeed] decreed that death shall be [ever-present] among you: but there is nothing to prevent Us 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 You have known the first creation, then why do you not reflect? 62 Ponder upon the soil you till, 63 Do you make it grow or is it We who make it grow? 64 We could turn it, if We pleased, into straw; then you would rue the day, 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 nay; we have been undone!” 67 Have you seen the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to descend from the clouds, or do We? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 Have you ever considered the fire which you kindle? 71 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? 72 We have made it a Reminder (for the Hell-fire, in the Hereafter); and an article of use for the travellers (and all the others, in this world). 73 Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. 74
