The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 arise, and warn! 2 And thy Sustainer's greatness glorify! 3 cleanse your clothes, 4 And all defilement shun! 5 And do not favour others in order to receive more. 6 and be patient unto thy Lord. 7 Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded, 8 that Day will be a hard and distressing Day. 9 For the disbelievers - not easy. 10 Leave Me with him whom I alone have created, 11 and to whom I have granted resources in abundance, 12 And sons always present by his side, 13 and to whose life I gave so wide a scope: 14 Yet is he greedy-that I should add (yet more);- 15 By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! 16 I will constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 For he thought and he plotted -- 18 So let him be cursed! How he plotted! 19 And again perish he! How maliciously he devised! 20 Then he considered [again]; 21 And frowned and puckered his brow, 22 then he retreated and waxed proud, 23 And said, “This is nothing but magic learnt from earlier men.” 24 This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 I shall surely roast him in Sakar; 26 What will let you know what the Scorching is like! 27 It does not allow to live, and neither leaves [to die,] 28 It strips away the hide of man. 29 Over it are nineteen [angels]. 30 We have not appointed the guards of hell, except angels; and did not keep this number except to test the disbelievers – in order that the People given the Book(s) may be convinced, and to increase the faith of the believers – and so that the People given the Book(s) and the Muslims may not have any doubt – and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah mean by this amazing example?” This is how Allah sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills; and no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man. 31
