We created you, then We shaped you and then We said to the angels, "Prostrate yourselves before Adam," and they all prostrated themselves, except Satan. He was not among those who prostrated themselves. 11 "What prevented you" (said God), "from bowing (before Adam) at My bidding?" "I am better than him," said he. "You created me from fire, and him from clay." 12 (Allah) said: "Get thee down from this: it is not for thee to be arrogant here: get out, for thou art of the meanest (of creatures)." 13 Satan replied: 'Give me respite till the Day they shall be raised.' 14 Said He (Allah): 'you are among the respited' 15 Said he, 'Now, for Thy perverting me, I shall surely sit in ambush for them on Thy straight path; 16 Then surely I will come upon them from before them and from behind them and from their right and from their left, and Thou shalt not find the most of them thankful. 17 He said: Get out of this (state), despised, driven away; whoever of them will follow you, I will certainly fill hell with you all. 18 And (unto man): O Adam! Dwell thou and thy wife in the Garden and eat from whence ye will, but come not nigh this tree lest ye become wrong-doers. 19 Then began Satan to whisper suggestions to them, bringing openly before their minds all their shame that was hidden from them (before): he said: "Your Lord only forbade you this tree, lest ye should become angels or such beings as live for ever." 20 And he swore to them both: 'Surely I am your sincere adviser.' 21 So he misled them with deception. Then when they tasted of the tree, that which was hidden from them of their shame (private parts) became manifest to them and they began to stick together the leaves of Paradise over themselves (in order to cover their shame). And their Lord called out to them (saying): "Did I not forbid you that tree and tell you: Verily, Shaitan (Satan) is an open enemy unto you?" 22 Both cried out: 'Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and do not have mercy on us, we shall surely be among the losers.' 23 "Go," said God, "one the antagonist of the other, and live on the earth for a time ordained, and fend for yourselves. 24 He said: "Therein you shall live, and therein you shall die, and from it you shall be brought out (i.e. resurrected)." 25
