And lo! Jonah verily was of those sent (to warn) 139 He abandoned his people 140 Then lots were drawn and he became of those who were pushed into the sea. 141 So the whale swallowed him, for he was blameworthy, 142 And had he not been of those who [even in the deep darkness of their distress are able to] extol God's limitless glory, 143 He would have tarried in the belly thereof till the Day when they are raised. 144 ۞ We cast him out of the fish unto dry land and he was sick. 145 And We caused to grow, over him, a spreading plant of the gourd kind. 146 We sent him to a hundred thousand men or more, 147 And they believed; so We permitted them to enjoy (their life) for a while. 148 Now ask them (O Muhammad): Hath thy Lord daughters whereas they have sons? 149 Or did We create the angels females while they were witnesses? 150 Is it not that they say, from their own invention, 151 "Allah has begotten off spring or children (i.e. angels are the daughters of Allah)?" And, verily, they are liars! 152 Has He (then) chosen daughters rather than sons? 153 What is the matter with you? How do you decide? 154 Will you not, then, bethink yourselves? 155 Or do you have a clear authority? 156 Then bring your book, if you are truthful. 157 They claim that He has kinship with the jinn, yet the jinn themselves know that they will be produced before Him [for judgement]. 158 Exalted is Allah above what they describe, 159 except the servants of God, sincere and devoted. 160 neither you nor what you worship 161 cannot mislead anyone 162 Except one who is (destined) to burn in Hell. 163 Of us there is none but hath a station assigned. 164 And verily we! we are ranged in ranks. 165 and we are of those who glorify Allah.” 166 They say, 167 “If we had some advice from the earlier generations,” – 168 we would surely have been God's chosen servants," 169 But (now that the Qur'an has come), they reject it: But soon will they know! 170 And certainly Our word has already gone forth in respect of Our servants, the apostles: 171 will certainly be victorious 172 and Our armies shall be the victors. 173 So turn thou aside from them for a season. 174 and see them [for what they are]; and in time they [too] will come to see [what they do not see now]. 175 Do they seek to hasten Our chastisement? 176 But when it cometh home to them, then it will be a hapless morn for those who have been warned. 177 Withdraw from them awhile 178 and see; and they too shall soon see. 179 Glory be to your Lord: the Lord of Glory is far above what they attribute to Him. 180 So peace be on the messengers, 181 and praise belongs to God, the Lord of all Being. 182
