۞ [The angels will be ordered], "Gather those who committed wrong, their kinds, and what they used to worship 22 Instead of Allah, and lead them to the path to hell; 23 Stop them. They must be questioned." 24 What aileth you that ye succour not one another? 25 Nay! on that day they shall be submissive. 26 And some of them shall advance towards others, questioning each other. 27 These say, 'Why, you of old would come to us from the right hand.' 28 They will say: “Nay, you yourselves were not the ones who would believe. 29 “And we did not have any control over you; but in fact you yourselves were rebellious.” 30 But now our Lord's word has come true against us: truly, we are bound to taste [the punishment]. 31 "We led you astray: for truly we were ourselves astray." 32 On that Day they will all share the punishment: 33 As such We shall deal with the evildoers. 34 Indeed, when it was said to them, “There is no God except Allah”, they were haughty. 35 and said: “Shall we forsake our deities for the sake of a distracted poet?” 36 Rather, the Prophet has come with the truth and confirmed the [previous] messengers. 37 you shall surely taste the painful punishment, 38 “And you will not be compensated except for your deeds.” 39 But the sincere (and devoted) Servants of Allah,- 40 For them is the sustenance known to Us. 41 Fruits; and they will be honored 42 In Gardens of Delight. 43 (Sitting) on couches, face to face, 44 A bowl shall be made to go round them from water running out of springs, 45 delicious to those who drink it 46 Neither dulling the senses nor intoxicating, 47 And with them will be mates of modest gaze, most beautiful of eye, 48 [as free of faults] as if they were hidden [ostrich] eggs. 49 Then some of them will turn to others, and will ask each other. 50 A speaker among them will say, "Indeed, I had a companion [on earth] 51 who used to say: -- Are you also one of those who confirm the Truth (of life after death)? 52 (Do you think) we would be paid back our due when we are dead and reduced to dust and bones?' 53 He shall say: Will you look on? 54 He therefore looked down and saw him amidst the blazing fire. 55 'By God', he said, 'you had almost ruined me. 56 for had it not been for my Sustainer's favour, I would surely be [now] among those who are given over [to suffering]! 57 So, are we not going to die, 58 except our first death, and shall we not be punished' 59 This is certainly the greatest triumph 60 and for the like of this let the workers work. 61 Is this better as an entertainment or the tree of Zaqqum? 62 Which We have reserved as punishment for evil-doers? 63 Indeed it is a tree that sprouts from the base of hell. 64 The shoots of its fruit-stalks are like the heads of Shayatin (devils); 65 Truly they will eat thereof and fill their bellies therewith. 66 And behold, above all this they will be confounded with burning despair! 67 Then indeed, their return will be to the Hellfire. 68 They had indeed found their forefathers astray. 69 But they make haste (to follow) in their footsteps. 70 yet before them most of the ancients went astray, 71 And indeed We sent among them warners (Messengers); 72 Look, then how was the end of those who had been warned, 73 Save the bondmen of Allah sincere. 74
