Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ The Inevitable Hour! 1 What is the sure calamity! 2 And what do you know what that indubitable event is? 3 THE LIE gave [the tribes of] Thamud and 'Ad to [all tidings of] that sudden calamity! 4 Then the Thamud were destroyed by an awesome upheaval; 5 And as to Ad, they were destroyed by a roaring, violent blast. 6 which He willed against them for seven nights and eight days without cease, so that in the end thou couldst see those people laid low [in death,] as though they were so many [uprooted] trunks of hollow palm trees: 7 Do you see any vestige left of them now? 8 And Fir'awn and those before him and the overturned cities committed sin. 9 They therefore disobeyed the Noble Messengers of their Lord – so He seized them with an intense seizure. 10 [And] behold: when the waters [of Noah's flood] burst beyond all limits, it was We who caused you to be borne [to safety] in that floating ark, 11 so that We might make it an instructive event for you, and retentive ears might preserve its memory. 12 Hence, [bethink yourselves of the Last Hour,] when the trumpet [of judgment] shall be sounded with a single blast, 13 And the earth with the mountains shall be lifted up and crushed with one crash, 14 So that is the day when the forthcoming event will occur. 15 and heaven shall be split, for upon that day it shall be very frail, 16 On its fringes will be angels, eight of them, bearing their Lord's throne aloft. 17 That will be the Day when you shall be brought forth (before Allah) and no secret of yours shall remain hidden. 18 Then as to him who will be vouchsafed his book in his right hand, he shall say: here! read my book! 19 Behold, I did know that [one day] I would have to face my account! 20 So he shall have an agreeable life 21 In a Garden on high, 22 its fruits are near. 23 'Eat and drink with wholesome appetite for that you did long ago, in the days gone by.' 24 But, he who is given his book in his left hand will say: 'Woe to me, would that my book had not been given to me! 25 Nor that I knew my reckoning! 26 Oh, would that it had been death! 27 My riches have not availed me, 28 "My power and arguments (to defend myself) have gone from me!" 29 (It will be said): "Seize him and fetter him, 30 Roast him in Hell, 31 Fasten a chain to them - seventy cubits long - 32 "This was he that would not believe in Allah Most High. 33 And urged not on the feeding of the wretched. 34 So no friend has he here this Day, 35 Nor any food except from the discharge of wounds; 36 that none excepting the sinners eat.' 37
