The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
A questioner asked of a chastisement about to fall 1 The infidels, of which there is no averter. 2 From Allah, Lord of the Ascending Stairways 3 Whereby the angels ascend unto Him and also the spirit, On a Day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 And We see it nigh. 7 On that Day the heavens shall become like molten brass, 8 And the hills become as flakes of wool, 9 And no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend 10 though they may be in one another's sight: [for,] everyone who was lost in sin will on that Day but desire to ransom himself from suffering at the price of his own children, 11 And his spouse and his brother. 12 and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, 13 And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. 14 But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell 15 Taking away (burning completely) the head skin! 16 It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, 17 and amassed wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ VERILY, man is born with a restless disposition. 19 If evil befalls him he is perturbed; 20 And refraining, when good reaches him. 21 save those that pray 22 who are steadfast in prayer; 23 those in whose wealth is a right known 24 for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, 25 who confirm the Day of Doom 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 for none may ever feel secure from the punishment of their Lord; 28 and guard their private parts 29 Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed - 30 So those who desire more than this – it is they who are the transgressors. 31 And those who fulfil their trusts and covenants, 32 and standby their witnessing, 33 and who take due care of their Prayer: 34 Such shall dwell in the Gardens (i.e. Paradise) honoured. 35
