The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou enveloped! 1 Arise and warn! 2 proclaim the greatness of your Lord, 3 purify your garments; 4 And pollution shun. 5 And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! 6 be patient unto your Lord. 7 For when the Trump is sounded 8 Surely that day will be a day of anguish, 9 not an easy day for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me with him whom I alone have created, 11 And gave him abundant wealth 12 And children present [with him] 13 whose life I have made run smoothly 14 After all that he desires that I should give more; 15 By no means; he is stubbornly opposed to Our Signs. 16 I will cover him with arduous torment. 17 For lo! he did consider; then he planned - 18 death seized him, how was his determining! 19 Again (self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! - 20 Then he looked round; 21 and then he frowns and glares, 22 Then he turned away, and was haughty. 23 and said, "This is nothing but sorcery from the ancients. 24 This is naught but the word of a mortal. 25 I will surely roast him in the Scorching. 26 And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned], 28 It scorches the mortal. 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
