The tribe of Thamud rejected the Messengers. 141 When their brother Saleh said to them: "Will you not take heed?" 142 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 143 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds. 145 (Do you think) you will be left secure here 146 In gardens and fountains, 147 farms, and palm-trees in thick groves, 148 You hew dwellings in mountains and exult in that. 149 So be mindful of God and listen to me. 150 and obey not the commandment of the prodigal 151 who spread evil in the land with no reform." 152 They said: You are only of the deluded ones; 153 Thou art but a human being like unto us. So bring thou a sign if thou art of the truth-tellers. 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel: she has a right of watering, and ye have a right of watering, (severally) on a day appointed. 155 "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day seize you." 156 So they hamstrung her, and in the morning could only regret. 157 So the punishment overtook them. Most surely there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe. 158 Yet verily your Lord is mighty and merciful. 159
