The Hijjr Valley (Al-Hijjr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Alif Lam Ra. Those are the signs of the Book and of a manifest Koran. 1 The unbelievers would haply like to wish that they had submitted (and become Muslim). 2 Leave them that they may eat and enjoy themselves and (that) hope may beguile them, for they will soon know. 3 And We have not destroyed a town but there was therefor a decree known. 4 no people can forestall their doom, nor can they delay it. 5 They say: 'You to whom the Remembrance is sent down, you are indeed mad. 6 "Why do you not bring angels to us if you are of the truthful ones?" 7 We do not send down angels without reason, and if the angels descend they would not get any respite! 8 It is We who sent down the Koran, and We watch over it. 9 Indeed, We sent Messengers before thee, among the factions of the ancients, 10 And never does a Noble Messenger come to them, but they mock at him. 11 This is how We make the mocking* enter the hearts of the guilty. (* The acts of disbelief.) 12 They do not believe in it even though the practice of the ancients has already gone. 13 Yet even had We opened to them a gateway to heaven and they had ascended, on and on, up to it, 14 yet would they say, 'Our eyes have been dazzled; nay, we are a people bewitched!' 15
