The Inevitable (Al-Waaqe'ah)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ When the forthcoming event does occur. 1 There is about its happening no lie. 2 (Many) will it bring low; (many) will it exalt; 3 When the earth is shaken 4 And the mountains shall be crumbled to atoms, 5 so that they become as scattered dust 6 And ye will be three kinds: 7 Companions of the Right (O Companions of the Right!) 8 Those on the Left -- how unlucky are those on the Left! 9 And those who surpassed have indeed excelled. 10 They shall be the nearest to God. 11 In gardens of delight; 12 A throng of the ancients, 13 and only a few of them from the later generations. 14 They (will be seated) on gold-encrusted couches, 15 facing one another. 16 immortal youths shall go about them 17 With cups, and jugs, and a glass from the flowing wine, 18 neither causing headaches, nor intoxication; 19 and with fruit of any kind that they may choose, 20 and such flesh of fowl as they desire, 21 And companions with big beautiful eyes 22 Like unto Pearls well-guarded. 23 [And this will be] a reward for what they did [in life]. 24 No empty talk will they hear there, nor any call to sin, 25 But only the saying of: Salam!, Salam! (greetings with peace)! 26 As for those of the right hand -- how (happy) those of the right hand -- 27 Amid thornless lote-trees, 28 and clustered bananas, 29 And extended shade, 30 And in perpetually flowing water. 31 and abundant fruits, 32 Unending, unforbidden, 33 And carpets raised. 34 We have indeed developed these women with an excellent development. 35 And made them virgins, 36 loving companions, matching in age, 37 For those of the right hand. 38
