The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 The Unbelievers, the which there is none to ward off,- 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of ascent. 3 Whereby the angels ascend unto Him and also the spirit, On a Day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believer,] endure all adversity with goodly patience: 5 Verily they behold it afar off. 6 but, We see it as near! 7 On the day when the heavens become like molten metal. 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 And no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend 10 Though they shall be made to see one another [(i.e. on the Day of Resurrection), there will be none but see his father, children and relatives, but he will neither speak to them nor will ask them for any help)], - the Mujrim, (criminal, sinner, disbeliever, etc.) would desire to ransom himself from the punishment of that Day by his children. 11 His wife and his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, 13 and all those on earth. 14 No, in truth, it is a Furnace! 15 A remover of exteriors. 16 It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allah). 18 ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: 19 Fretful when evil befalleth him 20 And niggardly when good touches him; 21 save those that pray 22 Who are constant at their worship 23 They are those who assign a certain share of their property 24 For those who beg, and for the needy who cannot even ask. 25 and who accept as true the [coming of the] Day of Judgment; 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- 27 the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 Are free of blame, 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. 32 Who uphold their testimonies, 33 And those who of their prayer are observant. 34 They will live in gardens with honour. 35
