He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ The Prophet frowned and turned away 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 What made you think that he will not grow in virtue, 3 (He might) remember, and the Reminder might profit him. 4 As for him who considers himself free from need (of you), 5 To him you attend; 6 though you are not to be blamed if he would not purify himself -- 7 As for the one who comes to you earnestly (striving for guidance). 8 And whereas he fears, 9 you pay him no heed. 10 No indeed, this is a Reminder; 11 So whoever wills, let him pay attention to it. 12 Inscribed in Writs honoured, 13 uplifted, purified, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 Honourable and obedient. 16 Accursed is man. How ungrateful is he! 17 [Does man ever consider] out of what substance [God] creates him? 18 Out of a drop of sperm He creates him, and thereupon determines his nature, 19 and then made the course of life easy for him, 20 Then He causes him to die, and puts him in his grave; 21 Then when He wills, He will resurrect him. 22 Nay, but (man) has not done what He commanded him. 23 Then let man look to his food, 24 That We watered it in abundance. 25 and split the earth, splitting, 26 We make the grain grow out of it, 27 and grape vines and vegetables, 28 and olive trees and date palms 29 And garden-closes of thick foliage 30 And fruit and grass - 31 as provision for you and for your cattle to enjoy. 32 At length, when there comes the Deafening Noise,- 33 On the Day whereon a man shall flee from his brother, 34 and his mother and his father; 35 his wife and his sons: 36 For every one of them on that Day shall be business enough to occupy 37 [Some] faces, that Day, will be bright - 38 and be cheerful and joyous. 39 And many will be dust-begrimed, 40 Covered with the blackness (of shame): 41 Such will be the Rejecters of Allah, the doers of iniquity. 42
