The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ I swear by this city, Makkah - 1 And thou art a freeman of this City;- 2 And by the giver of birth, and whom he fathered, 3 We verily have created man in an atmosphere: 4 Thinks he that none can overcome him? 5 He says: “I have squandered enormous wealth.” 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Did We not grant him two eyes, 8 And a tongue, and a pair of lips?- 9 And did We not show him the two highroads (of good and evil)? 10 But he hath not attempted the Ascent - 11 And what could make thee conceive what it is, that steep uphill road? 12 (It is) to free a slave, 13 the giving of food upon the day of hunger 14 An orphan of near relationship 15 Or the poor in distress; 16 and being, withal, of those who have attained to faith, and who enjoin upon one another patience in adversity, and enjoin upon one another compassion. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right. 18 And (as for) those who disbelieve in our communications, they are the people of the left hand. 19 over them is a Fire covered down. 20
