The great ones among Pharaoh's people said: "Verily, this is indeed a sorcerer of great knowledge, 109 He would drive you forth from your land; so what is it that ye enjoin? 110 Then they advised Pharaoh: 'Put off Moses and his brother for a while, and send forth heralds to your cities 111 who should bring to you every skillful magician." 112 And the sorcerers came to Pharaoh, saying, 'We shall surely have a wage, if we should be the victors?' 113 He said, 'Yes, indeed; and you shall be among the near-stationed.' 114 They said, 'Moses, wilt thou cast, or shall we be the casters?' 115 He said: Cast. So when they cast, they deceived the people's eyes and frightened them, and they produced a mighty enchantment. 116 And [then] We inspired Moses, "Throw down thy staff!" - and lo! it swallowed up all their deceptions: 117 ۞ Thus truth was confirmed, and all that they did was made of no effect. 118 They were therefore defeated here and they turned back humiliated. 119 And the sorcerers were cast down, bowing themselves. 120 and said, "We believe in the Lord of the Universe, 121 "The Lord of Musa (Moses) and Harun (Aaron)." 122 Said Pharaoh: "Have you come to believe in him ere I have given you permission? Behold, this is indeed a plot which you have cunningly devised in this [my] city in order to drive out its people hence! But in time you shall come to know, [my revenge]: 123 I will cut off your hands and feet on the alternate sides and crucify you all." 124 They said: "Verily, we are returning to our Lord. 125 for thou takest vengeance on us only because we have come to believe in our Sustainer's messages as soon as they came to us. O our Sustainer! Shower us with patience in adversity, and make us die as men who have surrendered themselves unto Thee!" 126
