And verily We sent Moses with Our revelations unto Pharaoh and his chiefs, and he said: I am a messenger of the Lord of the Worlds. 46 But as soon as he came before them with Our [miraculous] signs, lo! they derided them, 47 (Even though) each miracle that We showed them was greater than the other. So We seized them with chastisement so that they may turn back. 48 And they said, "O thou sorcerer! Invoke thy Lord for us according to His covenant with thee; for we shall truly accept guidance." 49 So when We averted the calamity from them, they immediately broke the promise! 50 And Firon proclaimed amongst his people: O my people! is not the kingdom of Egypt mine? And these rivers flow beneath me; do you not then see? 51 Or am I [not] better than this one who is insignificant and hardly makes himself clear? 52 Wherefore, then, have bracelets of gold not been set upon him, and wherefore have not angels come with him accompanying 53 In this way he fooled his people and they obeyed him: they were a rebellious people. 54 So when they made Us wrathful, We took revenge from them – We therefore drowned all of them. 55 And We made them (a people) of the Past and an Example to later ages. 56
