The Night (Al-Layl)
21 verses, revealed in Mecca after The All High (Al-A'alaa) before Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the night when it envelopeth, 1 and by the day when it unveils. 2 and by the creation of the male and the female. 3 O men, you truly strive towards the most diverse ends! 4 Yet he who gives to others and has fear, 5 And believes in the best [reward], 6 So We will very soon provide him ease. 7 But as for him who is a miser, and self-sufficient, 8 and calls the ultimate good a lie 9 We shall pave his way to hardship, 10 His riches will not save him when he perisheth. 11 Surely it is for Us to show the Right Way, 12 And lo! unto Us belong the latter portion and the former. 13 Therefore do I warn you of a Fire blazing fiercely; 14 Which only the most wretched must endure, 15 who belied and turned away, 16 The pious ones will be safe from this fire 17 Those who spend their wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 And have in his mind no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 But only seeking the Countenance of his Lord the Most High. 20 and such, indeed, shall in time be well-pleased. 21
True are the words of Allah the Almighty.
