The tribe of Thamud also rejected the messengers. 141 Recall when their brother Salih said to them: "Have you no fear?" 142 Verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 143 Have fear of God and obey me. 144 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in this here, 146 “In gardens and water springs?” 147 And green crops (fields etc.) and date-palms with soft spadix. 148 Will you still hew your dwellings in the mountains? 149 Therefor keep your duty to Allah and obey me, 150 And obey not the command of the extravagant. 151 Who spread corruption in the earth, and reform not. 152 Said they: "Thou art but one of the bewitched! 153 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!" 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. For her is a [time of] drink, and for you is a [time of] drink, [each] on a known day. 155 And touch her not with ill lest there come on you the retribution of an awful day. 156 But they hamstrung her; and on the morrow were repentant, 157 For they were seized by the torment. Verily there was a sign in this, but most of them did not believe. 158 Your Lord, He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
