Al-Balad
The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ NAY! I call to witness this land 1 And you shall be made free from obligation in this city-- 2 and by parent and offspring, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and struggle. 4 Does he, then, think that no one has power over him? 5 He says: "I have wasted a great deal of wealth." 6 What, does he think none has seen him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 and a tongue, and two lips, 9 And shown him the two highways? 10 But he hath made no haste on the path that is steep. 11 and what shall teach thee what is the steep? 12 (It is) the freeing of a slave, 13 Or giving food in a day of hunger (famine), 14 An orphan, of kin, 15 Or a needy person in misery 16 and, then besides this, he be one of those who believed, and enjoined upon one another steadfastness and enjoined upon one another compassion. 17 Such are they that have attained to righteousness; 18 As for those who disbelieve in Our revelations, they are the people of the left 19 [with] fire closing in upon them. 20
