Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn; 1 and ten nights, 2 by the even, and the odd, 3 and by the passing night, 4 Is there not an evidence in this for those who have sense? 5 Have you not seen what your Lord did to the 'Ad 6 Iram of the pillars, 7 The like of whom were never created in the realm; 8 And the tribe of Thamud, who hewed rocks in the valley. 9 And with Firaun, who used to crucify. 10 Those who rebelled in the cities, 11 And who then spread a lot of turmoil in them. 12 So your Lord poured on them different kinds of severe torment. 13 Truly your Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man, when his Lord tries him by giving him honour and gifts, then he says (puffed up): "My Lord has honoured me." 15 But when He tests him by straitening his sustenance, he says: “My Lord has humiliated me.” 16 No! But you show no good to the orphan, 17 nor do you urge one another to feed the needy. 18 And ye devour heritages with devouring greed. 19 And love wealth with abounding love. 20 But no; when the earth is ground to powder, 21 And your Lord comes with the angels in rows, 22 And hell is made to appear on that day. On that day shall man be mindful, and what shall being mindful (then) avail him? 23 He will say: “Would that I had sent ahead what would be of avail for this life of mine!” 24 So on that day, no one punishes like He does! 25 none shall bind as He binds. 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 Return to your Lord well-pleased (with your blissful destination), well-pleasing (to your Lord). 28 So enter among My (righteous) servants 29 into My Paradise. 30
