The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Read (Prophet Muhammad) in the Name of your Lord who created, 1 Hath created man from a clot! 2 Read: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous, 3 Who teacheth by the pen, 4 taught Man that he knew not. 5 Nay, verily, man becomes grossly overweening 6 Because he sees himself self-sufficient. 7 truly, all will return to your Lord. 8 HAST THOU ever considered him who tries to prevent 9 a servant (of Allah) when he prays? 10 Have you seen if he was upon guidance 11 Or enjoineth piety? 12 What do you think? Have you seen if he belies and turns away, 13 Does he, then, not know that God sees [all]? 14 Yes certainly, if he does not desist, We will seize him by the forelock. 15 A forelock that lies, is sinful. 16 Then let him call upon his henchmen! 17 We will call the guards of hell. 18 Beware! Do not obey him, but bow in adoration and draw near (to your Lord). ۩ 19
