The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
By the Star when it plunges, 1 That your companion is not confused, nor has he gone astray, 2 Nor does he speak of (his own) desire. 3 It is a revelations which has been revealed to him 4 something that a very powerful one has imparted to him, 5 [an angel] endowed with surpassing power, who in time manifested himself in his true shape and nature, 6 And reached the highest pinnacle. 7 Then he approached and came closer, 8 And was at a distance of two bows' length or (even) nearer, 9 And He revealed to His servant what He revealed. 10 The heart [of the Prophet] did not misconstrue what he saw. 11 Will you then dispute with him as to what he saw? 12 And certainly he saw him descend a second time: 13 By the Lote-tree beyond which none can pass, 14 nigh which is the Garden of the Refuge, 15 when the lote tree was covered in mystic splendour. 16 The sight [of the Prophet] did not swerve, nor did it transgress [its limit]. 17 and he certainly saw some of the greatest Signs of His Lord. 18 Have ye seen Lat. and 'Uzza, 19 and, another, the third manat? 20 What! for you the males and for Him the females! 21 that, lo and behold, is an unfair division! 22 They are not but [mere] names you have named them - you and your forefathers - for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow not except assumption and what [their] souls desire, and there has already come to them from their Lord guidance. 23 Or shall man have what he wishes? 24 To Allah belongs the Eternal life and the first life. 25
