Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
HaMeem 1 I swear by the Book that makes manifest (the truth). 2 We sent it (this Quran) down on a blessed night [(i.e. night of Qadr, Surah No: 97) in the month of Ramadan, the 9th month of the Islamic calendar]. Verily, We are ever warning [mankind that Our Torment will reach those who disbelieve in Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of worship]. 3 On this night, every absolute command coming from Us becomes distinguishable. 4 determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) 5 as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. 7 There is no god but He: He gives life and causes death. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of yore. 8 Rather they are in doubt, playing. 9 So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke 10 enveloping people. That will be a grievous scourge. 11 Our Lord! remove from us the punishment; surely we are believers. 12 But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them 13 but then they turned away from him, saying: 'He is tutored, mad' 14 Were We to ease the torment for a while, you would still revert to denial of the truth. 15 Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. 16 ۞ We had tried the people of Pharaoh before them. A respected prophet had come to them (saying): 17 Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you. 18 Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. 19 I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me to death. 20 But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone." 21 And he called to his Lord, saying, 'These are a sinful people.' 22 So depart thou with My bondmen by night; verily ye shall be pursued. 23 (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," 24 How many gardens did they leave behind, and how many fountains 25 And the cornlands and the goodly sites 26 And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight! 27 Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt). 28 and neither sky nor earth shed tears over them, nor were they allowed a respite. 29
