A large group from the earlier generations. 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 And the fellows on the left hand; how miserable shall the fellows on the left hand be! 41 Amidst scorching wind and scalding water. 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 Surely they were before that made to live in ease and plenty. 45 And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 (Muhammad), say, "All the ancient and later generations 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth, 51 shall eat the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 "Then will ye fill your insides therewith, 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 That will be their entertainment on the Day of Recompense! 56 We created you; therefore why will you not believe? 57 Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit? 58 Did you create it, or are We the Creator? 59 It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated. 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed? 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower? 64 We could turn it, if We pleased, into straw; then you would rue the day, 65 "Verily, we are ruined! 66 Surely, we have been deprived (of the benefits)". 67 Have you considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 See ye the Fire which ye kindle? 71 Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 Then, exalt the Name of your Lord, the Great. 74
