The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, 1 (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; 2 (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. 3 To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore endure with a goodly patience. 5 They see it [the Day of Judgement] to be far off, 6 But We see it very near. 7 On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 even intimate friends will not inquire about their friends, 10 though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 his kin who sheltered him, 13 And all those who are in the earth – then only if the redemption saves him! 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 A fire that melts the hide. 16 and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: 19 When evil touches him, impatient, 20 and whenever good fortune comes to him, he selfishly withholds it [from others]. 21 save those that pray 22 [and] who incessantly persevere in their prayer 23 And those in whose riches is a known right. 24 for the impoverished nonrequester and the requester, 25 And those who believe the Day of Judgement to be true. 26 And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,- 27 Verily! The torment of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure, 28 And those who preserve their chastity 29 Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy 30 So those who desire more than this – it is they who are the transgressors. 31 And those who respect their trusts and covenants; 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 And those who protect their prayers. 34 They will be honoured in the Gardens of Bliss. 35
