Al-Balad
The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ NAY! I call to witness this land 1 And thou art an indweller of this city - 2 And by the begetter and that which he begat, 3 We have certainly created man into hardship. 4 Does he think that never will anyone overcome him? 5 He says, "I have spent enormous wealth." 6 Does he believe that none has seen him? 7 Did We not grant him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 and shown him the two highways [of good and evil]? 10 Yet he attempteth not the steep, 11 And what do you know what that difficult steep is? 12 (It is:) freeing the bondman; 13 Or the feeding on a day of hunger. 14 An orphan near of kin, 15 Or to the poor man lying in the dust. 16 and to be one of those who believe and urge one another to steadfastness and compassion. 17 These are the people of the right. 18 As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand. 19 Fire will be an awning over them. 20
