The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 arise and warn, 2 And thine Lord magnify! 3 And keep your clothes clean. 4 And keep away from Ar-Rujz (the idols)! 5 And give not a thing in order to have more (or consider not your deeds of Allah's obedience as a favour to Allah). 6 And be patient for the sake of your Lord (i.e. perform your duty to Allah)! 7 Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded, 8 that will surely be a hard day, 9 For the infidels, not easy. 10 Leave Me and him whom I created alone, 11 And give him vast riches, 12 and children living in his presence, 13 whose life I have made run smoothly 14 Yet he wants that I should give him more. 15 Nay! He is forward unto Our signs; 16 and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 He reflected, and then determined 18 and woe to him; how he plotted! 19 Again (self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! - 20 Then he looked, 21 frowned and scowled; 22 then he retreated and grew proud 23 And said: This is naught else than magic from of old; 24 Naught is this but the word of Man. 25 I will surely roast him in the Scorching. 26 And what will explain to thee what Hell-Fire is? 27 It does not allow to live, and neither leaves [to die,] 28 Blackening the skins. 29 Above it are nineteen guards. 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
