Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the dawn 1 and ten nights (of pilgrimage or the last ten days of Ramadan), 2 And by the even and the odd, 3 And the night when it departeth, 4 Is this not a sufficient oath for intelligent people? 5 Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the 'Ad (people),- 6 [the people of] Iram the many-pillared, 7 the like of which was never created in the countries? 8 And with the Thamud (people), who cut out (huge) rocks in the valley?- 9 And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes? - 10 Who did transgress beyond bounds in the lands (in the disobedience of Allah). 11 And multiplied iniquity therein? 12 Therefore did thy Lord pour on them a scourge of diverse chastisements: 13 For thy Lord is (as a Guardian) on a watch-tower. 14 As for the human being, when his Lord tests him, honors him, and grants him bounty, he says, "God has honored me". 15 However, when his Lord tests him by a measured amount of sustenance, he says, "God has disgraced me". 16 Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)! 17 or urge one another to feed the destitute? 18 and greedily devour the entire inheritance, 19 and why do you have an excessive love of riches? 20 But no; when the earth is ground to powder, 21 and (when you find yourself) in the presence of your Lord and the rows and rows of angels, your greed for riches will certainly be of no avail to you. 22 and when Hell is brought near that Day. On that Day will man understand, but of what avail will that understanding be? 23 He will say: "Alas the woe! Would that I had sent ahead something in my life." 24 But on that day shall no one chastise with (anything like) His chastisement, 25 nor will any bind as He binds. 26 (To the righteous soul will be said:) "O (thou) soul, in (complete) rest and satisfaction! 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], 28 Join My servants. 29 yea, enter thou My paradise!" 30
