The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
CONSIDER the sun and its radiant brightness, 1 by the moon, which follows it, 2 by the day when it brightens the earth, 3 And the night when it draws a veil over it, 4 By the Firmament and its (wonderful) structure; 5 and by the earth and how He spread it, 6 Consider the human self, and how it is formed in accordance with what it is meant to be, 7 And inspired in it the knowledge of its sins and its piety. 8 He who purifies it will indeed be successful, 9 and those who corrupt their souls will certainly be deprived (of happiness). 10 Thamud denied [their prophet] by reason of their transgression, 11 What time the greatest wretch of them rose up. 12 But the Messenger of Allah [Salih (Saleh)] said to them: "Be cautious! Fear the evil end. That is the she-camel of Allah! (Do not harm it) and bar it not from having its drink!" 13 But they rejected his statement as a lie and hamstrung the she-camel. For that crime their Lord rumbled down upon them, utterly razing them to the ground. 14 and He fears not the issue thereof. 15
