Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
By the dawn, 1 And the ten nights, 2 by the even and the odd, 3 And the night when it departs. 4 Why is there an oath in this, for the intelligent? 5 Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad, 6 [the people of] Iram the many-pillared, 7 The likes of whom had never been created in the land? 8 And with (the tribe of) Thamud, who clove the rocks in the valley; 9 And the mighty Pharaoh 10 They were tyrants in the land 11 And heaped therein mischief (on mischief). 12 Therefore your Lord struck them hard with the means of punishment. 13 Your Lord is certainly in wait. 14 BUT AS FOR man, whenever his Sustainer tries him by His generosity and by letting him enjoy a life of ease, he says, "My Sustainer has been [justly] generous towards me"; 15 But when He tries him by restraining his means, he says: "My Lord despises me." 16 Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)! 17 And urge not on the feeding of AlMiskin (the poor)! 18 Why do you take away the inheritance of others indiscriminately 19 and you have a love of wealth which can never be satisfied. 20 Nay, but [how will you fare on Judgment Day,] when the earth is crushed with crushing upon crushing, 21 And thy Lord shall come and the angels, rank on rank. 22 And hell is made to appear on that day. On that day shall man be mindful, and what shall being mindful (then) avail him? 23 He will say: would that I had sent before for this life of mine! 24 On that Day no one will punish as He punishes, 25 And His bonds will be such as none other can bind. 26 Serene soul, 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and well-pleasing Him. 28 Join My worshipers and 29 "And enter you My Paradise!" 30
