He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 from a blind man who had come up to him. 2 Yet for all thou didst know, [O Muhammad,] he might perhaps have grown in purity, 3 or yet remember, and the Reminder profit him. 4 For him who does not care, 5 to a rich man, 6 though you are not to be blamed if he would not purify himself -- 7 And as for him who cometh unto thee running, 8 and in awe [of God] 9 you pay him no heed. 10 No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder; 11 So whoso wills may give heed to it. 12 It is contained in scrolls highly honoured, 13 lofty and pure, 14 borne by the hands of scribes, 15 Honourable and obedient. 16 Cursed be man! how ungrateful is he! 17 From what thing doth He create him? 18 From a single sperm He created, then proportioned him, 19 then eased his path for him, 20 Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave; 21 and then, if it be His will, He shall raise him again to life, 22 Nay, but man did not fulfil what Allah had enjoined upon him. 23 So let man just consider his food: 24 That We pour down the water, pouring (it) down in abundance, 25 And We split the earth in fragments, 26 And We cause therein the grain to grow, 27 And grapes and vegetables 28 and olive trees and date-palms, 29 And enclosed gardens luxuriant. 30 And fruit and grass - 31 for you and for your herds to delight in. 32 But when the deafening cry shall be sounded 33 That Day shall a man flee from his own brother, 34 And from his mother and his father, 35 wife and sons, 36 For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him. 37 Some faces on that Day shall be beaming with happiness, 38 and be cheerful and joyous. 39 And other faces, that Day, will be dust-stained; 40 Dust shall cover them 41 Those! they are the infidels, the ungodly. 42
