The tribe of Thamud also rejected the messengers. 141 When their brother Saleh said to them: "Will you not take heed?" 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 I do not ask for any payment for my preaching. I shall receive my reward from the Lord of the Universe. 145 Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us, 146 amidst [these] gardens and springs 147 And green crops (fields etc.) and date-palms with soft spadix. 148 Though ye hew out dwellings in the mountain, being skilful? 149 "But fear Allah and obey me; 150 And do not obey the order of the transgressors, 151 Who corrupt the land and do not reform it." 152 They said: "You are only of those bewitched! 153 Thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! Come, then, forward with a token [of thy mission] if thou art a man of truth!" 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. She will have her share of water as you have your share, each on a certain day. 155 "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day seize you." 156 They slew the she-camel, but later became regretful 157 And the punishment seized them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers. 158 Yet verily your Lord is mighty and merciful. 159
