Al-Balad
The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ I do call to witness this City;- 1 and you are dwelling in this city -- 2 And (the mystic ties of) parent and child;- 3 We created the human in fatigue. 4 Does he think then that no one has power over him? 5 He says (boastfully): "I have wasted wealth in abundance!" 6 Does he, then, think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 And shown him the two ways (good and evil)? 10 But he did not venture to scale the difficult steep. 11 Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is! - 12 (It is) the freeing of a slave, 13 Or, feeding, in a day of privation, 14 The orphan near in relationship, 15 or to a needy person in distress; 16 and being, withal, of those who have attained to faith, and who enjoin upon one another patience in adversity, and enjoin upon one another compassion. 17 They are those on the Right Hand (the dwellers of Paradise), 18 As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand. 19 over them is a Fire covered down. 20
