The tribe of Thamud also rejected the messengers. 141 Their brother Salih said to them: 'Will you not be cautious? 142 Surely I am a faithful apostle to you 143 Have fear of God and obey me. 144 For this I demand no recompense from you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 145 Do you believe that you will be left here to live securely in the present state 146 "Gardens and Springs, 147 And corn-fields and palm-trees whereof the spathes are fine? 148 And you hew houses out of the mountains exultingly; 149 So be mindful of God and listen to me. 150 Do not obey the orders of the transgressors 151 who do corruption in the earth, and set not things aright.' 152 They said: "Surely you are deluded. 153 You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful." 154 He said, “This is the she-camel – one day shall be her turn to drink, and on the other appointed day, shall be your turn.” 155 Do not cause her to suffer lest you become subject to the torment of the great day (of Judgment)." 156 But they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 and the chastisement seized them. Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And lo! thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
