The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: fear ye not? 142 I have been sent as a trusted messenger to you. 143 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 144 And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds. 145 (Do you think) you will be left secure here 146 “In gardens and water springs?” 147 and cornfields, and palm-trees laden with fruit -- 148 carving comfortable houses out of the mountains? 149 Have fear of God and obey me. 150 Do not obey the order of the wasteful, 151 Who make mischief in the land and do not act aright. 152 They replied: 'Surely, you are one of those bewitched. 153 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!" 154 He said: This is a she-camel; she shall have her portion of water, and you have your portion of water on an appointed time; 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 But they hamstrung her and then regretted it. 157 But the Penalty seized them. Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe. 158 And indeed your Lord only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
