A company of the former peoples 39 and a good many of later times. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 scalding water and under a shadow of black smoke, 43 Which is neither cool nor is for respect. 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.) 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 We and our fathers of old? 48 Proclaim, “Without doubt all – the former and the latter.” 49 Shall most surely be gathered together for the appointed hour of a known day. 50 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 And filling with it your bellies 53 "And drink Boiling Water on top of it: 54 Drinking the way thirsty camels drink. 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you seen sperm? 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 It was We who decreed death among you. We will not be surpassed 60 that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not. 61 And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect? 62 Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground. 63 Is it ye that cause it to grow, or are We the Cause? 64 If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting, 65 crying, "We have been left to suffer loss. 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Have you considered the water you drink? 68 Do you send it down from the clouds, or We send it down? 69 If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 It is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people. 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
