The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A caller supplicated about a punishment to fall on 1 (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; 2 From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), 3 by which the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him in one Day which will last for fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed peace and blessings be upon him). 5 Surely they think it to be far off, 6 But We see it very near. 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends 10 Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children 11 And his wife and his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 and all those on earth. 14 By no means! For the raging flames of the fire 15 Dragging by the head, 16 It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Surely man was created fretful, 19 Very nervous when touched by misfortune. 20 And niggardly when good befalls him 21 Except those who closely follow (the Book of God), 22 [and] who incessantly persevere in their prayer 23 those who give a due share of their wealth 24 for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, 25 who confirm the Day of Reckoning 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom - 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 And those who of their private parts are guards. 29 except in regard to their spouses and those whom their right hands possess, for in regard to them they are not reproachable, 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, then it is those who are trespassers. 31 And those who keep their pledges and their covenant, 32 Who uphold their testimonies, 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 all these shall live honourably in the Gardens. 35
