۞ And We verily gave Abraham of old his proper course, and We were Aware of him, 51 Behold! he said to his father and his people, "What are these images, to which ye are (so assiduously) devoted?" 52 They said, "We found our fathers worshippers of them." 53 He said: "Certainly you and your fathers have all been in manifest error." 54 They said: "Are you speaking in earnest, or only jesting?" 55 He said: Nay! your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, Who brought them into existence, and I am of those who bear witness to this: 56 And [he added to himself.] "By God, I shall most certainly bring about the downfall of your idols as soon as you have turned your backs and gone away!" 57 So he made them into fragments, except a large one among them, that they might return to it [and question]. 58 They said: who hath wrought this to our gods? verily he is of the wrong-doers. 59 Some said, "We heard a young man, called Abraham, talking about them." 60 They said, "Then bring him here in the sight of all the people, so that they may act as witnesses." 61 They said: Have you done this to our gods, O Ibrahim? 62 He said: Surely (some doer) has done it; the chief of them is this, therefore ask them, if they can speak. 63 So they returned to [blaming] themselves and said [to each other], "Indeed, you are the wrongdoers." 64 But then they relapsed into their former way of thinking and said: "Thou knowest very well that these [idols] cannot speak!" 65 He said: worship ye, then, beside Allah, that which profiteth you not at all, nor it hurteth you? 66 Fie upon you and upon that which ye worship beside Allah! Will ye not then reflect? 67 They exclaimed: "Burn him, and [thereby] succour your gods, if you are going to do [anything]!" 68 Allah said, "O fire, be coolness and safety upon Abraham." 69 They sought to outwit him, but We made them the worst of losers. 70 and We delivered him, and Lot, unto the land that We had blessed for all beings. 71 And We bestowed upon him Isaac and [Isaac's son] Jacob as an additional gift and caused all of them to be righteous men, 72 And We made them Imams who guided (people) by Our command, and We revealed to them the doing of good and the keeping up of prayer and the giving of the alms, and Us (alone) did they serve; 73 And to Lot We gave judgement and knowledge, and We saved him from the city that was committing wicked deeds. Indeed, they were a people of evil, defiantly disobedient. 74 We admitted him to Our Mercy, he was among the righteous. 75
