The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 stand up, deliver your warning, 2 Glorify your Lord, 3 And thine raiment purify. 4 And all abomination shun! 5 And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! 6 And be patient for the sake of your Lord (i.e. perform your duty to Allah)! 7 And [warn all men that] when the trumpet-call [of resurrection] is sounded, 8 That shall be - that Day - a day hard. 9 and for the disbelievers, in particular, it will not be at all easy. 10 Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!- 11 And then bestowed upon him ample means, 12 And children present [with him] 13 I made things smooth and easy for him, 14 then he is eager that I should do more. 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 On him I shall impose a fearful doom. 17 For he thought and he plotted;- 18 May he be condemned! 19 What an evil plan he has made! 20 He looked (at others); 21 frowned and scowled, 22 Then turned he back, and grew stiff-necked. 23 and said, "This is nothing but sorcery from the ancients. 24 "This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 I will surely roast him in the Scorching. 26 And what will explain to thee what Hell-Fire is? 27 It spares not (any sinner), nor does it leave (anything unburnt)! 28 Blackening the skins. 29 and it has nineteen angelic keepers. 30 We have appointed none but angels as the keepers of the Fire, and We have not made their number but as a trial for the unbelievers so that those who have been endowed with the Book will be convinced and the believers' faith will increase, and neither those who have been endowed with the Book nor the believers will fall into any doubt. As for those in whose hearts there is a sickness as well as the unbelievers, they will say: “What did Allah aim at by this strange parable?” Thus does Allah let whomsoever He pleases to go astray, and directs whomsoever He pleases to the Right Way. And none knows the hosts of your Lord but He. (And Hell has only been mentioned here) that people may take heed. 31
