A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 And a multitude from the later generations. 40 As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left! 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 And the shade of black smoke. 43 Which is neither cool nor is for respect. 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 And used to persist in the awful sin. 46 And they used to say, “When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?” 47 and perhaps, too, our forebears of old?" 48 Say: "Indeed, the earlier and the later generations 49 Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day." 50 "Then will ye truly,- O ye that go wrong, and treat (Truth) as Falsehood!- 51 will eat from the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 "Then will ye fill your insides therewith, 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 Drinking the way thirsty camels drink. 55 Such will be their welcome on Judgment Day! 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 Create him ye, or are We the Creator? 59 It is We Who have ordained death among you, and We have not been beaten – 60 In the matter of exchanging you for others, and to transform you into what you do not know. 61 And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember? 62 Have ye seen that which ye cultivate? 63 Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We will We can make it like dry trampled hay, so you would keep crying out. 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 Rather, we have been deprived." 67 Have you considered the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who caused it to descend from the cloud, or is it We Who cause it to descend? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 Did you consider the fire which you kindle? 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 We have made it as a reminder and convenience for the needy. 73 So glorify your Lord, the most supreme. 74
