We also sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his Council, and he said, 'Surely, I am the Messenger of the Lord of all Being.' 46 But as soon as he came before them with Our [miraculous] signs, lo! they derided them, 47 Of all the miracles which We showed to them the latter ones were greater than the former. We struck them with torment so that perhaps they would return to Us. 48 They said, "Sorcerer, call on your Lord for us, by virtue of His pledge to you: we shall certainly accept guidance," 49 So when We averted the calamity from them, they immediately broke the promise! 50 And Pharaoh proclaimed among his people: “My people, do I not have dominion over Egypt, and are these streams not flowing beneath me? Can't you see? 51 "Am I not better than this (Moses), who is a contemptible wretch and can scarcely express himself clearly? 52 "And then - why have no golden armlets been bestowed on him? or why have no angels come together with him?" 53 He incited his people to levity and they obeyed him. Surely they were an iniquitous people. 54 So when they made Us wrathful, We took revenge from them – We therefore drowned all of them. 55 And We made them a precedent and an ensample unto those after. 56
